On the Mac the way to restore the computer is to press cmd/R as it boots up. This will display several options including Reinstall OSX and Disk Utility.

The first thing to try on the Mac is the disk utility which can fix many problems. In disk utility select the First Aid Tab and click Repair Disk. You should also use Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility can also be accessed from the Finder in Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Both these operations will take several minutes to finish,

If you choose to restore the Mac operating system after using cmd/R on starting your Mac then, this is done by downloading the operating system from the internet. This can take some time, at least an hour. On older versions of OSX that came on disk you can insert the disk and press C whilst booting up to load the disk rather than going to the desktop.
